Pisa is one of the major cultural centers of Italy that preserves a rich artistic heritage intact, made up of monuments, works of art, museums and stately buildings, now transformed into universities, which refer to the history of scientific research that since 1343, year of foundation of its university, it marked the life of the city. The Piazza del Duomo, also known through the poetic expression Piazza dei Miracoli, is the most important artistic and tourist center of Pisa, counted among the UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1987. You can admire the monuments that form the center of the religious life of the city, called miracles (by Gabriele d\u2019Annunzio) for their beauty and originality: the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Campo Santo, and the Leaning Tower.<\/p>\n
The second most important square in Pisa is Piazza dei Cavalieri where the Palazzo della Carovana designed by Giorgio Vasari stands, which currently houses the Scuola Normale Superiore.<\/p>\n
Pisa is also known for its spectacular lungarni, the streets that line the Arno river, interesting points of reference for tourists because they host important buildings dating back to the Middle Ages. The best known is the Lungarno Mediceo which houses the major historical buildings of the city, such as the Palazzo dei Medici, Palazzo Toscanelli and the Church of San Matteo in Soarta.<\/p>\n
In June some important cultural events take place: the Luminaria di San Ranieri, patron saint of the city (June 16) during which at dusk all the Lungarni palaces are illuminated with numerous candles lit to surround the windows and doors that enhance the buildings creating suggestive play of light and color and projecting the glow in the river water; the historical regatta with its procession in medieval clothes in which the boats of the city districts face each other on the water of the Arno river; the Game of the Bridge in which on the Ponte di Mezzo in front of the Municipality the various \u201cbarrel-plate\u201d players fought, now made less bloody with the push of the various city teams at midday and north of a cart placed on the top of the bridge.<\/p>\n
Every four years (many are the Maritime Republics) in the same month the four boats of Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa and Venice face each other and the challenge is preceded by the iron procession that tells the deeds and the characters of the four Maritime Republics.<\/p>\n

Pisa \u00e8 uno tra i maggiori centri culturali d'Italia che conserva intatto un ricco patrimonio artistico, fatto di monumenti, opere d'arte, musei e palazzi signorili, oggi trasformati in sedi universitarie, che rimandano alla storia della ricerca scientifica che dal 1343, anno di fondazione del suo ateneo, ha segnato la vita della citt\u00e0. La Piazza del Duomo, nota anche tramite l'espressione poetica Piazza dei Miracoli, \u00e8 il centro artistico e turistico pi\u00f9 importante di Pisa, annoverata fra i Patrimoni dell'Umanit\u00e0 dall'UNESCO dal 1987. Vi si possono ammirare i monumenti che formano il centro della vita religiosa cittadina, detti appunto miracoli (da Gabriele d'Annunzio) per la loro bellezza e originalit\u00e0: la Cattedrale, il Battistero, il Campo Santo, e la Torre Pendente.<\/p>
La seconda piazza pi\u00f9 importante di Pisa \u00e8 Piazza dei Cavalieri dove sorge il Palazzo della Carovana disegnato da Giorgio Vasari, che attualmente ospita la Scuola Normale Superiore.<\/p>
Pisa \u00e8 nota anche per i suoi spettacolari lungarni, le vie che costeggiano il fiume Arno, interessanti punti di riferimento per i turisti perch\u00e9 ospitano importanti edifici risalenti al medioevo. Il pi\u00f9 noto \u00e8 il lungarno Mediceo che ospita i maggiori edifici storici della citt\u00e0, come il Palazzo dei Medici, il Palazzo Toscanelli e la Chiesa di San Matteo in Soarta.<\/p>
Nel giugno si svolgono alcune importanti manifestazioni culturali: la Luminaria di San Ranieri, patrono della Citt\u00e0 (16 giugno) durante la quale all'imbrunire tutti i palazzi dei Lungarni vengono illuminati con numerose candele accese a contornare le finestre e le porte che esaltano gli edifici creando suggestivi giochi di luce e di colore e proiettando il bagliore nell'acqua del fiume; la regata storica con il suo corteo in abiti medioevali in cui si affrontano sull'acqua del fiume Arno la barche dei rioni cittadini; il Gioco del Ponte in cui sul Ponte di Mezzo davanti al Comune combattevano i vari giocatori a botte di \"targone\", oggi reso meno cruento con la spinta delle varie squadre cittadine di mezzogiorno e tramontana di un carrello posto sulla sommit\u00e0 del ponte.<\/p>
Ogni 4 anni (tante sono la Repubbliche Marinare) nello stesso mese si affrontano le quattro barche di Amalfi, Genova, Pisa e Venezia e la sfida \u00e8 preceduta dal corteo stirico che racconta le gesta e i personaggi delle quattro Repubbliche Marinare.<\/p>
